A town like Bario

Life in the villages of the Kelabit Highlands

As the mist rises to sit on the mountain tops behind Bario, there's a sense of serene isolation. Bario is a small town in the Kelabit Highlands of Borneo. Almost inaccessible by road, people here live a longhouse life of community and simplicity, as they have for centuries. It's a laid back place where the locals care little for clocks and schedules, where they 'shop' in the 'jungle supermarket', walk for hours without maps to neighbouring villages and farm the best rice in the world.

Hello!

fromelsewhere/travel.wix.com

In 2015 I traded house keys for hotels, hostels and homestays. I'm on a journey to see the world and make stories about the places I go and the people I meet. My aim is to promote sustainable, ethical travel: tread softly, learn much and make a positive impact. I hope you can join me!
